On the Crew

On the Crew a Underground Shift Boss Perspective

In this video series we are going to answers viewers questions and outline in the next 26 videos how you can get a job in one of the many Hardrock Underground Gold and Copper mines around the country looking for entry level people. We will cover why things are like they are and how employers (like everything else in life) carry a fair bit of baggage around when it comes to their mine, how it is run and who it is employed within it. But if you can so them that you understand the language, systems of work and culture then that’s the way you will get a job.

Current Episode

Episode 1 What’s going on in the Industry

In today’s first episode of On the Crew, we are going to have a look at where the entry level jobs are and where they aren’t. To do this we need to have a look at what is going on in the industry. First I will cover where there aren’t any entry level jobs like in Coal, Iron Ore, Nickel and Lithium. Why there is not a lot of shutdown work any more and how the Utility companies have discovered WHV people to fill their jobs. At the end (I think about the 8minute mark) I cover where the employers still need people and how you can educate yourself and give the employers what they want someone that knows how their mine works.

Episode 2 Language and Social Media

In today’s episode of On the Crew, we are going to have a look at why knowing the language used on site is so important to you succeeding in the job. I also have a look at why the mining companies don’t like you posting about your job.

Episode 3 Why so many people Fail

In today’s episode of On the Crew, I am going to have a look at why so many people fail in their first mining job. We have a look at an onboarding video from a big gold mining company to see what they need a new starter to know before they get to site, so how to fish to keep the analogy that I have been using.

Episode 4 How they train you on Site

In today’s episode of On the Crew, we are going to build on last weeks episode by explaining what happens when you get to site. Who’s going to train you, how they are going to do it and how things go wrong. With gold at $7000 an ounce the pressure is going to be on to get you up to speed quickly, so the pressure is on (everyone involved). The more you know before you go the easier it is to get up and running and why we wrote our training.

Episode 5 Why Underground Miners get Paid so much Money

In today’s episode of On the Crew, I am going to talk about why Underground Miners get paid so much money. How the pay rates and systems of pay worked out over the years, I give examples of how it changed from when I first started 30 years ago to today. I also have a look at a review we got from a student that just got a job and has some really good advice and give a shout out to another that is starting on a Truck with Byrnecut.

Episode 6 Why Mining Employers don’t use Formal Qualifications

In today’s episode of On the Crew, I am going to talk about why Employers or PCBU’s as the regs refer to them, can’t use any formal qualifications and have to issue their own onsite tickets, inductions and procedures. We have a look at the mining Regs and talk about how our training is the only place you can learn this information without getting a job and doing the employers training. To end we look at the article we were featured in The West Australian.

Episode 7 Why Mining Production Employers don’t use your RII Equipment Tickets

In today’s episode of On the Crew, I am going to talk about why Employers or PCBU’s as the regs refer to them, can’t use RII Equipment Tickets and have to issue their own onsite tickets, inductions and procedures. We have a look at the mining Regs and I talk about the 3 things I need out of a new starter on the crew before I would be happy to let them go by themselves.

In 2026 employers are looking for entry-level people on all underground Gold and Copper mine’s around Australia.

These jobs are nipper, truck operator, service crew, paste crew, agi and diamond driller offsider all starting at $90K a year or more.

You only need a manual license, you don’t need any equipment tickets as the employers have to issue their own onsite equipment tickets and procedures.

Knowing how the mine works, is the skill all the employers want and need, that most New Starters overlook, when trying to get their first job. It puts you 6 to 8 weeks ahead of everyone else looking for one of these jobs. The link to the different packages are below, educate yourself and get the mining job you are after
