Conflating Mining Jobs
Lately a workday doesn’t seem to go past without me talking to someone that has conflated the requirements for a mining job… and when I refer to mining job, I’m talking about actual production mining jobs. People trying to shove a square peg into a round hole and then getting upset when it just doesn’t work. It’s easy to see how they get misled and start confusing mining jobs with shutdown, civil and construction jobs, which are jobs on a mine site. There are no end of people out there trying to sell RII equipment tickets and resumes that obviously have no real mining experience and are either lumping all jobs on a mine site into mining jobs (they have no practical industry experience and therefore ignorance is showing) or worse, attempting to sell tickets and resumes that have no bearing in production mining. If people only spent 5 minutes having a look at the job ads and see what the employers actually want before they spent a small fortune confusion would minimised and they wouldn’t be trying to shove that square peg into the round hole.
You only have to type “underground” into Seek to see the jobs and that the production mining employers don’t require RII equipment tickets or formal qualifications. This is completely different to the shutdown, civil and construction work that happens on a mine site and standards required.
The mine is its own unique workplace and thinking that you can use skills learned in the shutdown, civil and construction space to make the jump across is just trying to shove that square peg into that round hole again. This leads to my big concern for these people and the problems that the employers have, when they hire one. That their idea of a mining job and the reality of the job are 2 different things, conflating mining jobs again. Leading them to only last a short amount of time in these jobs, which happens a lot. With Green new starters, all the employers see a failure rate above 50%, and we even get feedback from our clients who have completed the training, and as a result have made the informed decision that maybe mining just wasn’t for them.
Not one person that buys one of our training packages, doesn’t think that they are 100% ready for this job and career attached. Yet 40% of the people who do our training decide it’s not going to be for them once they find out what they have to do on site. This mirrors the employer’s results and why I encourage everyone thinking about a career in mining to do our DIY package first, to make sure it is going to be for you and you are not conflating mining jobs with shutdown, civil and construction jobs.
You only need a manual car license, you don’t need a HR. You can start as a Nipper, Truck, Agi or Diamond Driller Offsider on $90K to $100K a year. If you want a job and to sperate yourself from others, then knowing how the mine works, is the skill all the employers want and need that most New Starters overlook when trying to get their first job. If you can talk to the foreman in their own language, show them that you understand the culture and systems of work then it puts you 6 to 8 weeks ahead of everyone else looking for one of these jobs. Educate yourself and get the mining job you are after.
