Defining a Mining Job
There are a number of people conflating the different jobs that happen within the industry to new starters looking for a career. With the advice to “just get your foot in the door” given. However not all mining jobs are the same with a mining production role very different to the other jobs that happen on a mine site.
Short version: A mining job is a production role that directly keeps the mine running. A job in mining is any role that happens to be located at a mine site.
That distinction matters because people online blur the two, and it misleads new starters.
🪨 What a mining job actually means
A mining job is a production role — the work that physically advances the mine or extracts ore.
These roles directly affect:
- tonnes moved
- metres advanced
- ground supported
- services installed
- machines fixed and maintained
- production targets hit
Examples:
- Nipper
- Service Crew
- Truck Operator
- Charge-Up
- Fitters & Sparkies
- Paste Crew
- Bogger Operator
- Jumbo Operator
These roles require:
- understanding the mining cycle
- situational awareness
- working safely around heavy equipment
- knowing how crews interact
- being able to work independently once trained
This is the work employers mean when they say “mining experience”.
🟦 What a job in mining means
A job in mining is any job that exists on a mine site, even if it has nothing to do with production.
Examples:
- Shutdown worker
- Civil construction
- Scaffolder
- Rigger
- Crane Operator
- Kitchen hand
- Housekeeping
- Bus driver
- Security
- Admin
- Camp maintenance
- Barista at the village
- IT support
- Safety admin
These roles are in the mining industry, but they are not mining roles. They don’t teach you the mining cycle, they don’t expose you to underground operations, and they don’t translate into production experience.
🔥 Why the distinction matters for new starters
Because people online love to say:
“I worked in mining for 3 years — here’s how to get a job.”
But when you dig deeper, they were:
- in the kitchen
- in housekeeping
- in a camp job
- or FIFO in a non-mining role like shutdown, civil or construction
They had a job in mining, not a mining job.
And the advice from those roles does not help someone trying to become:
- a Nipper
- a Truck Operator
- Service Crew
- Paste Crew
Production mining is a different world with different expectations, risks, and skill sets.
