Why was Underground Training formed?
Underground Training was established in 2009 by a group of West Australian Underground Shift Bosses who recognized a serious challenge in the industry—high turnover rates among new starters. They were frustrated by the constant cycle of inexperienced employees joining, struggling, and then leaving, which disrupted efficiency and incurred costs.
The root cause? A lack of industry knowledge among new starters. Employers found it relatively easy to teach practical skills like truck driving but faced difficulties imparting the broader understanding of how a mine operates. This knowledge gap often led to new hires being unprepared for the job’s expectations, contributing to high turnover rates.
Underground Training developed a unique training program designed to bridge this gap by equipping candidates with the essential knowledge of mining systems, processes, and expectations. By demonstrating that you understand how a mine works, you’re able to show employers that you’re ready to hit the ground running—giving you a competitive edge in both securing and retaining a job.
If you’re thinking about mining, this background gives a clear sense of the challenges and how training programs like the one’s offered by Underground Training can address them.
