Your Resume: Getting Noticed in the Mining Industry

So, what really happens when you send your resume in for a mining job?

If you’re lucky, it might be printed and read—but here’s the reality: mining companies can receive thousands of applications from a single job ad. One company advertising for a full crew—from Shift Boss to Nipper—received over 10,000 resumes. Only 130 had prior mining experience.

You guessed it—they’re “kept on file” in HR’s trusty circular filing system.

If you’ve got a trade, skill set, or work ethic that could translate into mining, you need to make that crystal clear. With no prior mining experience, your resume should be laser-focused: keep it to 2-3 pages max, and make sure all the key info is on the front page. 

When searching the web, check directly on mining company websites or search Seek using terms like “Underground,” “Truck,” “Nipper,” or “Service Crew” for hard rock roles.

How long does it take to hear back from mining companies?

Anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months—seriously. Some companies move quickly, while others take their sweet time. As a rule of thumb: the bigger the company, the slower the response. They often have more layers of approvals, longer recruitment pipelines, and hundreds (if not thousands) of applications to sift through.
