Stench Gas

Stench Gas

Is a inert gas that smells like rotten eggs. This gas is used as a notification system, to alert all miners and other persons underground that there is a problem and to go straight to a refuge chamber and report in. Stench gas works by using the primary and secondary ventilation system to carry the gas being released at the top and middle of the ventilation system.

The stench gas signs are in green because in smoke the last colour you see is green

As part of your onsite underground induction you will be shown how to activate the stench gas cylinder. Normally, it’s very simple to operate, once you open the box there will a pin to pull and a button to push or pull to start the gas.
